Edited by: Cell Satimo on 23/02/2005 13:00:45 I think the point you make quite validly is that Eve isn't a Space Simulator. It is however a 'Space Game', and as with any game, certain aspects of real physical are simplified to make a game playable. Alot of your concerns are covered in game fiction. And if it is a great game, then Who cares?
Ok Since I'm slacking off work, here goes:
Quote: What sense, may I ask, is there in having something like a "max velocity"?
The sense is in making functioning rules to make a game
Quote: in the vacuum of space, you can reach pretty much whatever velocity you want, given that you have a) enough fuel = energy, and b) enough time to accelerate.
Sure but you might want to change direction, and surely in your proposed 'what eve is lacking' gravity from stellar bodies should also effect you right?
Quote: Besides, even if you ignore the above, the "max velocity" values in EVE are just begging to be ridiculed. I mean, the good old space shuttle moves with roughly 8000 m/s when in orbit.
Isn't that velocity all due to gravity from a stellar body?
Quote: To put it into fewer words, this is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a game about spaceflight, or space. And it doesn't feel like flying in space, either.
I have to disagree because it feels to me like a very accurate portrail of how I imagine a 3rd person view a space ship floating in space, as well as the feeling of distance.
Quote: No, what it feels like, and what it really is, is just the usual MMORPG universe, with the toons replaced by spaceships. The same goes for the universe in general, where the cities and dungeons of Everquest are replaced by things-that-look-like space stations and planets.
And enlighten us as to how the cities and dungeons of everyquest are real because ...
Quote: to the best of my knowledge, the one and only space game that actually has a good, Newtonian physics model is the old single-player title "Independence War" from the 1990'
See the MMPORG Hyper Jump Gate
Quote: But I guess it was too much to ask the average MMORPG player to handle
IMHO the average MMPORG player is more interest in MMPORG than realistic space flight simulation.
Quote: for all the moaning from some trained-monkey reviewers about how "complicated" they found the Newtonian physics in Independence War, I for one thought they were a lot easier and more intuitive than the lumbering point-and-click-from-A-to-B in EVE.
It's called 'tactical' interface for a reason.
